Bowerman 5k

So i have to share my excitement with you all!!

I ran a 5k this past sunday (finished in 22:00 so an alright race) at nike world headquarters campus. It was a great race and a bunch of really really really fast people!! But what totally made the race worthwhile was meeting Alan Webb, Galen Rupp, Matt Tegenkamp (Teg), and Kara Goucher (who is currently pregnant)!!!!! It was so amazing! Not to be "star struck" or anything... but they are so fast and it simply amazes me! Haha anyways... thought i would just include you all in on my exciting Sunday.

Can't wait to be back in Florida!!! Flying back Saturday has been long overdue!! :)

-Britt

its been a while

Hello ladies,

In the last 6 months my world has be flipped-turned upside down. In the next week or so I think things will have returned to right-side up and as close to normal as they may ever be! It has been a smooth transition from college to the "real world" and the "real Army," but it is a very different life. I am not sure what to do with myself some days. Now that I don't have to be up for practice at 730 and class from 9-3 with practice again from 345-530ish only to have to eat, shower, do homework, and whatever else the day holds. . . I have so much TIME. What do "normal" people do all day? Ha-ha.
I was busy working for the first 2 months, but now my job is done and I am just waiting to move to Alabama on the 5th of August. I was busy being a lifeguard, but the Army calls it a Combat Water Survival Swim Instructor. It was entertaining. I spent 8 hours a day in a pool (never thought I do another pool workout after leaving Riddle, but I was wrong!) teaching cadets how to survive with gear and equipment in water. It's rather difficult to swim in a uniform with an extra 10-20lbs of equipment, especially when several of the cadets don't even know how to swim!!!! (tangent here, sorry)
I didn't realize how much of the population in the US doesn't know how to swim. I thought it was something exclusive to a few people here and there, but its not. We ran some test on the demographics of the cadets and realized that more of the cadets from the Northern region of the US could swim vs. those from the South (despite living by oceans and beaches)!? My thought is there is far more to do in the South year round than in the North so maybe the cadets from the North spend more time at pools/lakes/ponds during the summer? Who knows. (tangent over!)
Anyway, while I have been here in Kentucky over the summer I had leave RyLee somewhere with someone. Well, obviously I didn't just leave her with anyone, anywhere, so I put her in a Boarding Kennel in the mountains of Georgia. The scenery is beautiful, there is a lot of land for her to run around on, AND they train her! Now, initially I did not care about the obedience training. I didn't and still don't think she needs it, but I went to see her for the 4th of July and WHOLY COW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I know you all know that she is more like a child to me than a dog, and that I spoil her rotten and take her everywhere and don't hardly talk about anything but her, so you can imagine how torturous being away from her for 2 months has been for me. I cried my eyes out when I had to leave her and you can only imagine my excitement when I got to go see her. I was pleasantly surprised to see she was equally as excited to see me! I got to see what she had learned after only being there for a month and I was blown away. For a dog that I thought was fine without all of this training, she can do things that I'd never thought of teaching her! Now the trick for me is keeping her up on all of this training. It took me several months of saving to be able to afford all of this. 90 days at a kennel anywhere is not cheap, especially one in the mountains that trains her too, but it has been so worth it. I wish you guys could see her now, I am SOOOO proud of her :D In addition to all of this excitement, RyLee's 4th of July present (aside from seeing ME!) was a little brother. I got her a friend. His name is Tyrk. He is a Doberman Pinscher. He is 3 months old in my profile photo on here, now almost 4 months. He contracted Pneumonia right after we left him with RyLee at the Boarding School (he got it from traveling, not from the kennel) and has been fighting that for the last month, but he is on the up side and doing well now. Only 8 days till I get my little ones back!!
Like I said before, August 5th I move to Alabama. I will begin flight school with the Army for the next 18 months. I am looking forward to it all, but scared at the same time. As of right now I am looking to fly the Blackhawk, but there are 3 other airframes that are available and it all depends on how well I do as to which one I get. I wont bore you with anymore details here on that, but Enterprise, Alabama is where I will be. It's only 3 hours from Pensacola, FL so when you all are racing in Tallahassee and that area I hope to drive (or fly) on over and see you!
I miss Daytona. I miss the team (even if some of you don't miss me :P ha-ha). I miss the fast pace of college life and everyone there. With working in the pool, was able workout now and again by swimming a few laps, very rarely got to go for a run :( Now I know why the Army is overweight...we hardly ever workout. Anyways, I've been trying to stay in shape as best I can and not just become a shape by swimming or riding my bike to work and back, but my efforts appeared fruitless as I was feeling more and more out of shape and blah. Sooooo, as an effort to be more self motivated on Saturday, July 24th I decided to run the Army 10-miler. Mind you it had been 2 months and I've not trained or hardly ran so this was a daunting idea, none-the-less, I did it. I don't think even on 2 hour long runs I've really ever ran 10 miles. Maybe ONCE. lol. So a new goal and accomplishment for me. My goal based on the level of fitness I felt I was at was to run 80 minutes for the 10 miles, but no slower than 95 no matter how awful I felt. Again, this is not Florida, and there are hills and gravel so I tried to estimate accordingly. I finished at 1:20:28. I was pleasantly surprised that my legs nor lungs at that pace didn't bother me, but by mile 8 my knees were aching BAD. I was a little ahead of my pace until mile 8 and the last hill and 2 miles got me and brought me back to my original pace. Nothing to be disappointed in, I gave it my all, and still think you distance people are CRAZY! ha-ha. Power to you and your body for enduring that day after day, but no thank you! I'll stick to running 10 miles once a year! I'll stick to my bike for anything over 5!
Well, I suppose an update on the last 2 months of my life is longer than any blog posted yet, and probably one of the less interesting based on everything I've read so far. LOL. It's great to read all about everyone's summer events and I look forward to reading more.
Welcome to the family to all of the new ladies. My only words of advice (take it or leave it, I was no all-star myself) are this: When you feel like the team, coaches, athletic dept, or school OWES you something, you've lost sight of why you're truly there. The team and all the opportunities that come along with it are just that, opportunities and privileges, not god give rights. Push yourself beyond any limits you feel exist, step outside your comfort zone a few times, open your eyes and your mind, because this team teaches you more than how to run well. Take it all in, the good with the stuff you'd rather leave behind, and HAVE FUN.
And again, welcome to the family :)

Awaiting Return!

I will be back in Florida in 9 days!!!
Who will be around?
I can't wait to see everyone!!!!! I miss you all.
Running has been about the same, really working in for my last few days in the northern weather.
I am so not ready for the Florida heat... gonna kick me in the butt.

Hopfe called and is coming north again and is considering driving down with me... should be interesting if he does!

I did send Ellie a blog invite but I guess she didn't figure it out :(
I can't wait for her to join the team... she seems like she will fit in really well!!

Nothing super exciting for me to share, just how super excited I am to see you all :))

FLLLOOORRIIIDDDAAAA

So it only took me like 2 weeks to figure this thing out and then I found an e-mail from Kira inviting me ha. But anyway Im finally back in Florida and here for good until school starts. I went to highschool running camp with Emily, Alex, Old Greg and Evans which was fun and got some good training in. I also just got back from St. Louis and had some crazy runs there...the hills were awful! I've pretty much been running hills once a week at Riddle and doing a long run every sunday, and I actually just ran a 5k time trial two days ago. I was a little worried because I know I've backed off my training a lot this summer because I don't want to get thurt again but ran 20:10 and helped pace some of the highschoolers, so it was okay.

As for the rest of my summer I've been surfing a lot which has been amazing and every tuesday I play ultimate frisbee. I am sore every Wednesday! It is very tiring and I feel out of shape every time I play. Tomorrow I am going to Dino World (don't judge me) and am extremely excited! I also think I'm going to buy a t-shirt.....we'll see how much this place impresses me first. Anyway, I can't wait for everyone to get back! Have a great rest of the summer and enjoy some summer runs.

Here in Florida

Well... after like... a million attempts to figure out how to sign up and post to this blog i can finally add an update! this could be a bit random and hard to follow... sorry bout that.

So after about a week being home i decided 2 things... 1. i needed to find some soccer while i have the chance... and 2. there was no way i would find the motivation to run at all in the month of June unless i found some running buddies. soooooo... I was running one day with my friend Gracie (who i played soccer with my senior year of hs) and she asked me to join and indoor soccer team with her!! YAY! so i've been playing soccer all summer... and not running nearly enough.

However, it seems to be a weird phenomenon, my family has suddenly become crazy about being healthy? i don't know what happened while i was away at school. of all the people that live at our house... my older sister (Emily) and her husband (Mark) now go running every night (i join them when they run but mostly for me they are just like easy runs, although that is better than not running), mom tries to run as often as she can, and swims when she doesn't want to run, my uncle (Vince), who usually sits on the computer ALL DAY, ran 3 miles with us the other day, one of my younger brothers (Noel) has joined our evening running group, and my older brother (Tom) even tried to run with us once (he pretty much lives on the couch).

Other than running almost all of my family has at least attempted to join me in my pool workouts. Mom, Emily, Mark, Vince, Noel, Joy (my little sister), Jerry (my youngest brother), and Char (my kind of aunt) have all tried to. the first time they joined me Joy dropped out after trying to run across the pool once. mom wouldn't let Jerry drop out and he later reported to my dad "Holly tried to kill us"... haha. now i just have to get Dad and Tom to try a pool workout.

When i was younger my parents always made us all drink whole milk (becuz we were too skinny?) we have now moved to 2%... skim milk... and soy milk? and we used to get sugary cereal for a treat every Sunday... now all we've got is nasty corn flakes. Although with me being home i have convinced my parents to get frosted mini wheats and honey nut cheerios so i have something to eat :)... another strange new health obsession they have taken to... instead of normal peanut butter... my dad eats the nasty natural stuff... and my sister and her husband and my mom get almond butter? weird.

My little sister... though she doesn't run with us or do pool workouts... stays in shape with her ice skating. She's gone to Atlanta, Philadelphia, and West Palm beach this summer for her ice skating (we are in west palm beach right now actually). But my mom now does not let her eat or drink anything with dairy, any sweets more than once a week, and various other things that i haven't figured out yet. It's really entertaining though becuz anytime she and her friend Christa convince me to take them shopping they both sneak ice cream, italian ice, and, Joy's new favorite, jars of cake frosting (nasty).

So i guess my family's new healthy thing didn't quite affect everyone afterall :)

Mallory came to visit last Saturday. That was nice because i hadn't seen him since May.

Emily wanted to try running a whole 5k... so i told her i would run it with her to keep her motivated... so she made it! that was the 4th of July... now her new goal is to run a 5k under 30 minutes... so we have another 5k on Saturday. Right now, as i mentioned, I am in west palm beach. That means i have no one to run with :( so today i ran from our hotel to the beach... then on the beach.. and then back.. it felt like it took a million years... but i was only gone 30 minutes... ugh! oh well.

I can't wait to get back to Daytona and see everyone again. Hope you all have a good rest of the summer though!!!

:)

Oh hills.... Adventure runs from Portland

Hey everyone!!!

It sounds like all of our summers are going pretty well! It finally stopped raining (knock on wood) out here in Portland so it has been for the most part in the 80's and not a cloud in the sky, which is amazing compared to the rain and 50-60's it was before. Running has been going pretty well... although i don't think i will EVER get used to these hills out here, i swear i'm running up the sides of mountains! haha I figure it will help me in the long run though, which is really the only thing keeping me going as i'm dying for oxygen on my hill adventures. I've been hiking a bunch out here too, which is amazing!!!

I wish we had trails like they have out here, almost every one of my runs is on a trail which is really nice. Oh, I also live right down the street from the Nike World Campus, the one we all were at for Nationals... so i train on their campus two to three times a week, they have a great two mile trail that is really awesome to run on! My internship is... pretty much really boring! But i'm making the best of it and counting down the days till im back in Florida and near the BEACH! I am by no means nearing the point of albino but i'm not far haha so i cant wait to get back out into the sun! I do get to bike to work most days, which is nice... a really different experience for me because i have never had to take trains or buses or even bike to work before. The people here also make it incredibly interesting... Portland certainly has lived up to its reputation of being weird in my books!! I'll have to fill you all in on the details of my odd encounters when we all get to camp.

Anywho, i hope everyone is doing well and having fun this summer!! Can't wait to see you all soon!!!

Of course we'll power-walk next semester ;) Ladies- you're all so good, practicing is going well for all of you and it sounds like you're enjoying your summer! I've so many things I want to do before I come back to US, cant belive it's only like four-five weeks until im coming back (haven't booked my ticket yet tho..). I was in Gothenburg last week end and watched one of the biggest meet in Sweden for youth. It was fun. Tomorrow im going to Stockholm!! yey!!! maybe i will see Sami and Elina, but im not sure. Im there to visit my sister and im so excited. I love that town, so nice and cute- its an archipelague (my region is too but its something special w stockholm!!) My practicing is going so so..Im out running almost every morning before work but just for like an half hour. It's hard cuz I have a full time job. But i love my runs!! I run along the sea, viewing the pretty islands out there, and then i finish my run w a jump in the sea :) Awesome. But listen to this.this morning it was like 50 F in the water...puuuha!! hahaa..like the ice tub i was not in for ten min tho..

About Time.

sooo after I gave you all a hard time about not posting I figured I should finally write something :)

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! I am so far; babysitting two 13 year olds... which is more like driving them around and making sure they don't burn the house down or anything. haha
It makes finding time to train pretty easy, the only hard part is the heat... lately it has been in the high 90's and humid which I know for all your southern people is normal but for here it is CRAZY. Boston hit 102 the other day which is a record in like 30 something years.

Anyways, my mom is really into crew now, she has her own rowing skull and takes classes/lessons and she races. She convinced me to do a beginners thing and I love it! It is actually a great leg workout so I have been getting up every tues/thurs at 4:45 to row from 5:30-7:30. Next week I am starting the competitive rowing team (just kinda a club team) but I like it. With the heat I have been doing a lot of pool workouts since I can do those from home.
Running has been going well, as in injury free! Henry was here for 4 weeks (he originally only planned on staying one haha) and he got me out pretty much every day even if he didn't run he convinced me to, which is what I need. I have done a lot of 5k's and I use them as tempo workouts. My dad got me a GPS/heart rate monitor watch from Garmin... it sounds like it would be useless but it actually motivates me to get out and do something every day even if I just bike. It tracks EvERY detail online and I can send all my progress to the coaches (if I want to! lol) so when I see online that there is a blank spot during a week I get angry, so it motivates me to keep all my days filled!

My training is already way ahead of the end of last summer with 5ish more weeks to go. I turn 21 saturday but don't have any plans considering I have zero intention of even trying alcohol. I am actually staying injury free, quite the miracle, but my health hasn't agreed 100% yet. Working on that.

Beth came to visit a few weeks ago because she had a race in Boston. She is going to be around this weekend and both Hopfe and Evans are in MA for a while about an hour away from me. I talked to Evans to try planning a date for the four of us to run or even just hang out for a few hours, but who knows!

I am already excited for camp! It seems weird that we are only gaining Ellie and technically Julie (not saying Ellie and Julie aren't enough!), but hoping that means we will have a very experienced and close team. I hung out with Ellie when she was in town and you were all at a meet and she will fit in AMAZINGLY.

I miss you all a lot, especially having you to run with. Henry was a great running partner because he would just talk to keep me occupied but he usually did his own thing. A few old teammates from high school and I have run a few times but still not the same.

I love hearing about all your internships! I hope next summer I will be an American and get a fun job like you ladies. haha

california love

hey chicas!

first of all, erika, the blog looks awesome! second, i'm happy to report that I will be "grad" assisting in the fall, so I still get to see all your lovely faces in the early morning :) i guess that is incentive enough to attempt to stay in shape, despite how nice it is to be a lazy bum sometimes. haha.

so i'm back at home with my parents for the summer...started my internship with NGC (now my third summer there, i feel so old!). its been kinda boring, but its only the first week, so I guess I shouldn't expect much else. There's a lot of reading I have to do to get up to speed with the other interns on my project, but it doesn't seem too bad (yet). things have finally settled down as far as the other chaos going on at my parents' house. my little brother's graduation was last week, so there was all kinds of prep my sister and i had to do for our mom to get the house ready for entertaining along with getting things in order to start work on the new family farm. it didn't help that i looked like a chipmunk last week either (wisdom teeth pulled).

well thats about all i got for now. as i write this i'm supposed to be packing so my sis and i can drive up to the farm tomorrow at like 5am to meet the parentals, but you girls know me well enough that the whole packing thing just doesn't work for me. haha.

hasta luego!

Summer in Florida

Hey y'all!! I hope everyone is going out and enjoying summer, but still finding time to do some running every once and a while :) Since I'm not doing xc I am kinda lost in training...but I am totally healthy right now and running 4 times a week. It is soooo hot here, so unless I want to wake up at 5am I run at 8pm when its cooler. It throws off my dinner schedule, but its all worth it. I can't wait for xc season where Ill be able to watch you run super fast!! With all this running in hills/trails you ladies are going to be even more amazing than ever!! I was looking at the cross country schedule today and looks like I will be able to run some open races, haha well see how that goes.

One more month till I move back to Daytona and I just can't wait!! :) I'm really looking forward to this weekend, b/c Russell is flying home from Kansas. I'm picking him up from Tampa early early Saturday morning, and were spending the weekend with his family in St. Pete. Maybe ill go to the beach on the west coast for the first time!
I hope you all have a fun and safe holiday weekend.

~Baleigh

P.S. Erika, the new blog layout looks great :)
